What a Transfer Switch Actually Does
A transfer switch is the electrical device that connects your standby generator to your home's wiring. Think of it as the gatekeeper between the utility grid and your generator. Only one source of power can feed your home at a time, and the transfer switch is what controls which one it is.
When utility power goes out, the transfer switch disconnects your home from the grid and connects it to the generator. When utility power returns, the transfer switch disconnects the generator and reconnects the grid. This happens automatically on most modern systems, without you doing anything.
Without a transfer switch, there is no safe way to connect a generator to your home's electrical panel. Plugging a generator directly into a wall outlet or using homemade connections is dangerous, illegal, and a code violation in Alabama.
